You can change the LOTRO config file so that it doesn't revert to Aero basic, and for me at least it works fine, and it's much easier on the eyes when playing in windowed mode. C:\Users\(User)\Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online (This is the folder where your screen shots and keybindings are saved by default)UserPreferences file -> AllowDesktopCompositing=False to AllowDesktopCompositing=TrueSave the file, and when you load LOTRO from now on it shouldn't switch to Aero Basic. To change it back, just switch AllowDesktopCompositing= back to False. And I know that doesn't answer the original posters issue, just tossing my two cents in on the thread. And who knows, that might actually help him.
Common Technical Issues - "I need to launch the game twice sometimes!" or "I get a message about "Changing to Windows Basic" and the game closes and I end up back at the launcher but a second try works!?" SYMPTOMS: On Win7/Vista (32bit/64bit) you may sometimes get as far as launching into the game world but the character select screen never opens it just closes and there is no error, however a second attempt launches the game fine.SOLUTION: This is a compatibility issue with DX10 enabled games, Vista Aero and "window focus" changes. There are a couple work-arounds listed here in order of effectiveness: Open "Documents" > "The Lord of the Rings Online" Open the "Userpreferences.ini" file within Under the [Display] section find "AllowDesktopCompositing=False " and change it to True Save and exit the Userpreferences.ini file Alternately you can, if your quick, click on the "black screen" that comes up as the game launches, this gets the game screen back into "focus" (ie. it becomes the front window) or you can a) Disable DirectX 10 graphics in-game or b) disable Aero permanently: Right-click the Desktop Personalize Window Color and Appearance" "Open classic appearance properties...." and in the menu that comes up click on "Windows Vista Basic" and click Apply. (On Win 7 in the Personalize screen just scroll down and choose "Windows Basic" in the "Basic and High Contrast Themes" section) (While this makes Windows a little less "flashy" it has an added side-benefit of freeing up system resources used by running Aero which is fairly graphically intense)Lastly one other "work around" for this is to put the game into "windowed mode" (Alt Enter) prior to exiting out of it at the end of a play session. When you next login the game will not be in "full screen" mode (you can press Alt Enter again though once you've reached character select to put it into full screen) and should not close out on a fresh reboot launch.
